Because of the wonderful folks out in blogland, I have been lucky enough to move on to Round 3 of the Paper Crafts Gallery Idol Contest! To everyone who stopped by the blog last week, voted for me, and left incredibly kind comments, I want to send out a huge THANK YOU! To my long-time blog buddies (I'm talking to you Jessi, Jeanne, and Jen), to the folks following my blog (*hi guys!*), to the absolute strangers who put in a vote for me on the PC site, your support is overwhelming and I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Now back to Round 3:) The challenge for this round was to take a common element (e.g., single patterned paper sheet or single stamp) and use it to make one feminine card and one masculine card. For me, the challenge was to come up with 2 strong ideas.
Can you spot the common element? {Yup, the "bubbly" stamp} The concepts for these cards came in a flash! I was browsing my stamps, and when I picked up my Daydreamer stamp set, it flashed immediately. No fuss, no muss:) So with ideas in mind, I went straight to work on my feminine card. What could be more feminine than flowers?
I had so much fun free stamping the background on this card! I used my favorite pigment inks from Fresh Ink and they are a joy to work with! Great bold colors and excellent coverage. To really make the sentiment stand out I used a ribbon behind the vellum sentiment. I cut small holes in the vellum to pull the ribbon through to the front and tied a bow. Girlie card done! On to the masculine card!
I don't mean to generalize, but the men in my life prefer CAS cards with bold graphics. Lucky for them (and me), that's what I like to do! To create a realistic looking beer mug, I used vellum to mimic frosted glass. The amber beer color was created by rubbing yellow and orange ink on the backside of the vellum and placing a deep rich yellow cardstock behind it all. In person, the mug glows!
The vellum is placed inside of the reverse cut mug (cut out on the Silhouette). To get a 3D look on the mug, I cut the vellum insert slightly wider than the opening. When placed inside the aperture, it creates a curved pop up effect (see below). The foam of the beer is embossed in white (using my common element stamp) onto vellum.
This technique would be so much fun adapted for a frosty soda or milkshake. Man card done!
With that, I leave you with much mahalo and aloha,
jj

ReplyDeleteWow! Another fantastic job, JJ! Love the vellum.
ReplyDeleteThese are fabulous, JJ! I love the frosty beer glass! I actually would prefer a good beer to flowers any day! HA! Both are wonderful cards!
ReplyDeleteGenius! Pure genius! Love them both.
ReplyDeleteyou are just so creative! and how embarrassing - I thought I already followed your blog... I do now :)
ReplyDeleteJJ - You know I've got your back!! Gosh - you just blow me away every time - I don't know how many times I've told you that you're a genius - but come on now! That dimensional beer glass is amazing - and I just love how you used the same element - the bubbles on both cards! I think this really marries them together. The feminine card is so pretty with all the beautiful color and the way you tied the bow through the vellum is a real stand out for me! Well done!!! Take another deep breath! So proud of you for making it to the next level!!! Big Hugs!!
ReplyDeleteThese are two absolutely great cards. I love the feminine one--the bold colors are great, and what a fun idea to put the ribbon behind the sentiment on vellum--I've got to try that myself. But, absolute genius to take that flower and turn it into the foam on a frosty cold mug of beer, and then create the perfect guy card. Love this one, too. Cool how you used vellum on both cards in different ways.
ReplyDeleteJJ--both of your cards are fantastic! I love the Daydreamer stamp set and you created a beautiful background. That beer mug is simply too cute. Good luck on this next round.
ReplyDeleteHow super clever!!! Love both of your cards!!!
ReplyDeleteThese are amazing, love your concept, and the vellum on both cards looks incredible!

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely *love* these JJ! Using flowers as beer froth - genius!! I love the complete contrast of the two cards, really makes them both great in their own right!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your sweet comment on my blog! And for listing all the other contestants and linking to their blogs too. That is extremely good of you!!
Awww thanks for the shout-out, JJ! :D And I think I said this in my comment on your last post but I have to say it again - you're a genius! That beer mug looks incredible - so cold and frosty! Love the staples on the sentiment strip too. As for the feminine card the stamped background is gorgeous - perfectly random - I always have trouble with that. ;) The ribbon behind the sentiment is gorgeous too. Really really awesome!!!

ReplyDeleteJJ, I am such great company in this competition! Wow, this duo of cards is nothing short of amazing. You have GOT it girl! I wish you the best here and always! :)
ReplyDeleteThis card set was one of my favorites and I was bummed to see that you didn't move on. This could also be fun to do for a kid, using darker inks on the vellum to create root beer. I love it!!!!
ReplyDeleteVery clever! It took me a second to see what the "same" part was on both cards, LOL! I never would have seen "beer foam" in a flower stamp. That vellum beer mug is great! And the pretty "girl" version is beautiful!
