Moxie Fab Tuesday Trigger Girly & Gutsy

Today the whole family was in lockdown mode due to Hurricane Irene.  Not the best of circumstances, but on the upside, it did give us lots of quiet family time.  All of us cozied up in the basement and I got to spend some time with my kids AND make a card!  Today's card inspiration is the Moxie Fab Tuesday Trigger - Girly & Gutsy!  

I think my card's got the the girly, but not sure if I captured enough of the gusty. I tried to create a card that was feminine and modern, but not frou frou.  So I picked this modern doily stamp with spindles that remind me of the detail of the Warren Platner chairs in the inspiration pic.  The colors were added with copics to bring out the flowery feel.     

I chose a small damask design for the center of the doily and added a little jewel in the center (colored pink to match).  The finishing touch are the small rhinestones around the edge.

Waltzingmouse Sketch Challenge 61

After the excitement of the earthquake yesterday (we live about 75 miles from the epicenter), today was pretty calm:)  I had fun with this card inspired by Waltzingmouse Sketch Challenge #61 from Sarah Martina Parker!  

I tried mimic the overall shapes in the sketch with a happy cake shop window scene.  I was so happy to finally get to ink up my new Eat Cake set!  The beautiful large tiered cake is the centerpiece inside a die cut window.  On each side of the window is a topiary stamped with Teeny Trees stamps.  

I didn't have a die or stamp for the topiary pots, so I just hand cut them and used my PTI canvas impression plate on them for texture.  I accented each flower on the cake with a little liquid pearls.  Don't you just love that little cake stand?  

I noticed with the colors of this card, it was so hard to get a decent pic!  My first pic is more what the card looks like in person.  I'm finally over my old point and shoot digital camera.  If anyone has a recommendations on DSLRs, I'm all ears!

Embellish Color Challenge - Coloring

I had such a productive day today that I rewarded myself a night of uninterrupted card-making.  The weather outside today was blah and rainy (not to mention the swamp fire 2o0 miles away - yeah I said swamp fire;).  So with the "help" of my twin 12 year old boys, everything was cleaned, washed, and organized, woo!  And now the only messy spot in the house is my craft table.  I had so much fun making this card inspired by the new Embellish Color Challenge!   In addition to the great color inspiration (love those happy colors), the challenge is to incorporate coloring.  

I started off with one of my favorite flower stamps by Hero Arts.  That stamp doesn't have any leaves, so I borrowed a couple from a PTI set.  I stamped and heat embossed the images in white onto kraft.  

So coloring to me means copics.  I'm a copic beginner, but coloring on kraft is one of my favorite things.  The colors come out so intense and kraft paper is more forgiving than white.  The pink is a bit darker than I intended, but I still like how it turned out:)   

To incorporate the yellow, I used teeny-tiny jewels in each of the tiny stamped circles of the flower center.   And just for fun, I did a little outside the die cut technique (see that little part of the leaf outside of the die cut shape?)  Take a look here and here for tips on this technique.  

It's hard to tell, but the back of the card was die cut in ripe avocado to match the leaves.  I even had time to make a matching envelope which I love to do, but rarely get to do.

Moxie Fab Squares to Cherish

This Moxie Fab Tuesday Trigger Challenge was 2 weeks long and I'm still getting it in just under the wire!  The inspiration for this challenge is this soothing image...

I love the soft colors in the picture, and isn't that afghan a work of art? I don't have experience with crocheting or knitting, but the pieced afghan reminds me of a quilt (which I have done). So for my card, I did kind of a honeycomb quilt pattern. I'm absolutely obsessed with hexagons and honeycomb style quilts are some of my favorite. I love they way they are vintage and modern all at once.  So the pieces of my "quilt" are made from 5 different patterned papers.  

Ever since I got my hexagon dies, I've had this card in my head.  To mimic the soft look of the inspiration image, I pieced the hexagons on a layer of vellum.  The entire piece of vellum is layered over the card base including the sentiment.  

And a side note...this is the first time I used my new vellum adhesive runner.  I was a bit skeptical at first, so I tried it out on some scrap vellum.  It works perfectly!  On my card, I put the adhesive over the sentiment so the vellum would really stay close to the cardstock. The adhesive is virtually undetectable even in person.
